Håkan Stille

Professor Håkan Stille has a distinguished carrier both in the academia and in consulting. He is Professor Emeritus of Soil and Rock Mechanics in the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, where he taught from 1986 to 2010. Previous from joining the academia he worked as a consulting geotechnical engineer at Hagconsult AB, from 1969 to 1984 and then as head of the soil and rock mechanical group and later Vice-president of Skanska Technique. From 2010 to the present, he has been member of dispute boards or witness expert in major claims and an independent consultant in geotechnical engineering, responsible for the geotechnical design or member of the board of experts for infrastructure projects in nineteen countries in all continents.

Professor Stille is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, of the Swedish National Group of ISRM and of the Swedish Member Society of the ISSMGE. He was the Chairman of ISRM´s commission on Rock Grouting and has conducted several activities related to standards development and implementation, namely as Vice-chairman of the Swedish Commission of Implementation of Eurocode 7: Geotechnical design (2005-2011), member of the Swedish Group for Geotechnical Design (CEN/TC 250/SC7) and of the Evolution Group 13 and Task Group 3 (Rock Mechanics) of the European Committee for Standardization.

Has authored and co-authored over 100 papers and publications to professional journals, conferences and seminars and authored and co-authored several books, in English and Swedish: “Rock Engineering”, “Design of anchored sheet pile walls”, “Cement grouting of Fractured Rock” and “Rock Grouting”.

Finally, Professor Stille has received several awards and given awards lectures: the Laurits Bjerrum Lecture from NGI in 1988, the Sigge Thernwall Award (2005), the Atlas Copco Award in Rock Engineering (2006) the Swedish Society of Civil and Structures Engineers Award (2007) and finally the 2017 ITA’s Sir Muir Wood lecture.
